About GAMSAT & Scores
Most universities require a minimum of 50 per section. But what counts as a "good" score depends on several factors:
- Your GPA - The higher your GPA, the lower GAMSAT score you need (and vice versa)
- Portfolio vs. non-portfolio schools - Portfolio schools weigh other factors alongside scores
- Rural applicant status - Rural pathways often have different cut-offs
- Domestic vs. international - Different quotas and requirements apply
As a rough guide: 58 is average (50th percentile), 65 is good (85th percentile), and 70+ is very high. But there's no single target score - a 60 might be highly competitive for one applicant but not enough for another. Check GEMSAS and individual university websites for current requirements.
Most students need 3-6 months of consistent preparation. This varies based on your background - science graduates may need less time on Section 3, while non-science backgrounds may need longer. Students with strong humanities backgrounds often find Sections 1 and 2 more manageable. Our course is designed to be flexible so you can work at your own pace.
No. Many successful GAMSAT candidates come from non-science backgrounds including arts, law, and business. Sections 1 and 2 don't require any science knowledge. For Section 3, our course teaches you everything you need - even if you've never studied science before.
Section 3 tests reasoning in biological and physical sciences with the following breakdown:
- Chemistry - 40% (first-year university level)
- Biology - 40% (first-year university level)
- Physics - 20% (Year 12 level)
Importantly, this is a test of scientific reasoning, not just knowledge recall. ACER uses medical scenarios to test your ability to apply fundamental science concepts - you need to understand the underlying biology, chemistry, and physics to reason through any scenario presented. No calculator is allowed.
GEMSAS provides an official GPA calculator on their website. Different universities may weight your GPA differently, so check individual medical school requirements.
